A Franciscan perspective on women's lives

Abstract

This experience report addresses violence against women and the promotion of a culture of peace within the context of Franciscan education. Given the increase in femicide rates and the various forms of violence affecting women, it is essential that schools assume their formative role in building relationships based on respect, equality, and human dignity. The general objective was to promote reflections on violence against women, raising students' awareness toward the construction of a culture of peace and care for life. As specific objectives, the study sought to problematize social and cultural aspects related to gender-based violence, stimulate students’ critical thinking regarding power relations and respect, as well as strengthen Franciscan values of fraternity, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence. The methodology was characterized as a qualitative experience report, developed through an interdisciplinary proposal involving the subjects of Science and Portuguese Language with 5th-grade elementary school students from Colégio Franciscano Sant'Anna, in Santa Maria (RS), Brazil. The activities included readings, dialogues, reflections, problematizations, and pedagogical productions aimed at understanding violence against women and valuing the culture of peace. The study was grounded in authors such as Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Arnaldo Merino, Maria Tereza Maldonado, and Ourique. The results highlight the importance of the school as a space for awareness, ethical formation, and the development of attitudes committed to respect for differences and the construction of a more just and peaceful society.
